So, we took a road trip for Thanksgiving week -- going to Salt Lake City by way of Louisville, CO -- not exactly the shortest distance between two points, but we got to visit Tanaya & Tim for a few days in their new home. On the way to Colorado, while we were still in Texas (the state goes on and on and on it seems) we stopped for an early dinner in Amarillo at what must be a famous landmark: The Big Texan. It has seven limos for picking up patrons (I assume from hotels?), and each one sports a set of authentic Longhorns on the front grill.
The Big Texan's claim to fame is their 72 oz. steak, which you get for FREE if you can eat the whole thing within 60 minutes. We opted not to compete. But just to prove that we really were at the BIG Texan, here I am in their Texas sized rocking chair -- it's been a long time since my feet didn't touch the floor when I sat in a chair!
We arrived in Louisville late Saturday night, after about 16 hours drive time. Sunday was Rod's birthday -- he turned 55 just in case you were wondering. We attended church at the Louisville Ward and got to hear their ward choir, which was a real treat -- we have never had that many people in our STAKE choir, let alone a ward choir -- and they sounded awesome. Tanaya is in the choir, so of course, that added to the quality. Tanaya made some delicious warm soup, and Rod got his usual birthday cake, German Chocolate and his favorite ice cream, black raspberry chocolate chip, which is not very easy to find, thanks to the efforts of Tim & Tanaya.
On Monday we got to see the University of Colorado at Boulder campus -- "Tim's School". It is a really pretty campus, and what I hadn't noticed from photos I had seen before, is the beautiful stacked sandstone that the buildings have as their exterior. It's kind of reddish, and is really pretty. And of course the awesome Flatiron Mountains in the background add to the scenery. Here you can see Tim & Rod at one entrance to "Tim's Building", the Economics bldg.
Just for fun I snapped a pic of the sign on "Tim's Office" - notice his name at the top of the list (he's come full circle, he was called Timothy in Kindergarten, too) -- it's the only name I can pronounce:
Tim was a great tour guide, showing us some of the fun sights around their new home -- and we have lots more we look forward to seeing on future trips. In the car and on the road again to Utah -- after travelling some dicey roads through Wyoming, we arrived at Grandma & Grandpa Larsen's at about 2:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning -- safe and sound. Hats off to Rod & Tim for handling the white knuckle driving. We had a nice feast and later in the evening the combined creative genius of the group worked on a gingerbread house and Christmas tree...
Chelsea and Tanaya made the house and tree so cute....
And others of us created a couple of ridiculous looking ginger-persons. But we had lots and lots of laughs and fun. Rod meticulously cut gumdrops up and added the final touches around the foundation of the house -- the perfect finishing touch.

looks like fun, i'm jealous of the HUGE rocking chair ...what a hilarious photo opp! The ginger bread houses are too cute! Can't wait to see you all in a few weeks!
